Learn how to play the Djembe! Fun is a by-product, but first build from within the wisdom of the drum known as djembe! No experience is necessary and drums are provided.

Gary Meitrott brings an entertaining and educational introduction from his theatrical background along with his personal passion for teaching the style and technique of the djembe. As Gary says, “the drum is automatically a builder of community, but knowing how to release the power only comes from knowing how to speak its specific language, offering each drummer a responsible part in creating a drumming community, giving a further development of trust and intimacy in that circle."

Gary, student of the ethnic hand drum for over 30 years, brings an in depth knowledge of West African drum known as the djembe. Many decades ago Gary studied intensely with Babatunde Olatunji and also had further enhanced learning with YaYa DiYallo. Gary Meitrott started Drum Journeys of Earth in Rutland over twenty years ago, a school of numerous styles of hand percussion including, Cuban, Brazilian, Middle Eastern, Irish, and Native American styles.

Athletes generally have strong and powerful bodies, but often have limited range of movement in various joints due to the repeated movements required by each sport. Yoga helps re-balance the physical body. Yoga helps increase range of motion and joint flexibility. Yoga helps develop strength and joint stability too. Yoga helps enhance focus and body awareness. Yoga also helps strengthen the body’s core and increase ability of the core to stabilize movements of the spine.

As we transition from summer sports to winter sports, come join us for a series of classes intended specifically for strong athletes with “tight” muscles! We will perform dynamic movements similar to a Power Yoga class, which might include Sun Salutations and various flows of standing postures. We will also perform additional postures to increase strength and stability, focusing on hip mobility, leg and core strengthening. We will focus on developing functional movement patterns appropriate for most snow sports, hopefully reducing the potential for common winter sport injuries.

Join Bob Speck, EYT-500 (Certified Functional Strength Coach and Personal Trainer, and Certified Alpine III Ski, Snowboard I, Adaptive Snowboard I Instructor) for this series of classes, all designed to help athletes be more fit for sports and move with more ease. (Bob is currently the co-director of the HOTV Yoga Advanced Studies and Teacher Training Program, and was formerly a manager, clinician, and training director for various ski and snowboard schools. He and Jo Kirsch continue to occasionally lead winter ski / yoga excursions and retreats.)

Co., while you are mindfully guided to create two mini stretch malas for gifting to loved ones over the holidays! Find enchantment in the natural physical and metaphysical qualities of Picture Jasper and Snowflake Obsidian.

Picture Jasper is a nurturing, protective stone that brings comfort and alleviates fear. It stimulates the Base Chakra in providing physical and spiritual energy for the body. It also is believed to activate the Third Eye Chakra, enhancing visualization. It instills a sense of proportion and harmony, enlivening one’s creativity and initiative and is thought to be a marvelous talisman for bringing hidden emotions to the surface for healing. Snowflake Obsidian is a stone of purity. It balances mind body and spirit. Placed on the sacral chakra, snowflake obsidian will calm and soothe and allow you to view unhealthy patterns in your own behavior, opening the door to change. Obsidian draws hidden imbalances to the surface and releases them. The blackness of this stone is believed to enhance the ability to reach your inner self. It is one of the earliest known stones to be used for scrying (seeing into the future).

Each mala will be ready to give to a loved one with a gift box containing a metaphysical description of the stone and an 'intention note' written by the artisan (you)!

In this fast-paced, yang-style world, the practice of Yin Yoga helps us maintain balance. Through long-held postures, we explore our compassionate, no striving, receptive yin nature and learn to recognize and move with the natural patterns of life. With attention to the breath and sensations in the body, Yin Yoga helps us: balance our yin and yang aspects; Increase the flow of qi or prana in the body; Maintain the health of our connective tissue; Reconnect to the meditative origins of yoga

With silence, poetry and gentle music, we’ll journey together into our own inner spaces to reconnect with ourselves and the healing wisdom that is our true nature.

Yin Yoga uses long held postures that support us in accessing the deeper, more Yin parts of ourselves. In this training we will look at how Yin practice with its ancient yogic roots can affect our physical, energetic and emotional bodies. Through this understanding we will explore ways to incorporate Yin postures and philosophy into our teaching and practice.

The training will include:

-Taoist philosophy as it applies to Yin Yoga
-The Yin practice of non-striving and how it can influence our yoga and our life
-The movement of Qi or Prana in the body, and how it can be affected by Yin practice.
-Anatomy as it relates to the understanding of our own natural pattern
-Sequencing your Yin practice or a Yin class
-What it means to hold a safe, sacred space for a Yin practice

The weekend is suitable for all levels of practitioners and for Yoga teachers who are interested in including Yin in their teaching.
*With additional hours, this is a Heart of the Village Yoga Advanced Studies and Teacher Training Core Weekend.

Yoga is not synonymous with asana, even though most of the general public thinks so. Yoga is about learning to pay attention. All the practices direct us to focus our attention on one thing, and as we practice and breathe and learn to focus, our minds get quieter. We begin to see things that were previously too clouded by the busy-ness of the mind to see. We like this. We feel more centered, more relaxed. And one day, maybe all at once, and maybe little by little, we “get” it, we wake up. And what do we wake up to? The realization that there really is only ONE of us here. And that is the experience of yoga - the connection with the True Self. We cannot conceptualize, define, or explain it. We can only have it. It is an experience of boundlessness, and it is born of practice.

No one can teach us yoga, really. Teachers can only pass along a set of instructions to follow, and if we follow those instructions, perhaps that will lead us to the experience. Once that happens, a transformation occurs, we change. We become more conscious, more aware, more compassionate, more, well, connected. And that is the point of all the work - to recognize there really is no such things as “other.” It becomes impossible to ignore the suffering of the world and we realize that the whole point of our life is to serve. Seva isn’t something you do part time, or only on Wednesday afternoons - it’s a lifestyle. It’s an awareness you bring into every aspect of your life. Everything you do is with compassion and awareness - and this comes from years of practice and paying attention.

YOGA OF 12-STEP RECOVERY IS A HOLISTIC MODEL DESIGNED TO ADDRESS THE PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL DISEASE OF ADDICTION.

The characteristics and effects of addiction could easily be described as separation. Addictive behaviors disconnect us from ourselves, our loved ones, our environment and so much more.

Conversely, yoga itself means union, integration, balance. Yoga and its practices teach the fine art of balancing our multidimensional lives while living in a complex world.

Yoga of 12-Step Recovery was created as a holistic model to address the physical, mental and spiritual dis-ease of addiction. Informed by the latest research in neuroscience and trauma healing, Y12SR “connects the dots” by combining the somatic approach of yoga with the cognitive approach of the 12-step recovery model – the most well-known addiction recovery program in the world, with millions of active practitioners.Y12SR is a donation-based relapse prevention program open to the community and anyone is welcome to attend. One does not need to currently be attending a 12-step program, or currently practice yoga, to participate. Classes are limited for ages 13 and older.

Proper fundamentals and mechanics are the keys to an efficient powerful golf swing. Stance, posture, and alignment are the basis for proper fundamentals and mechanics deal with the travel and shape of the swing. So, what does this have to do with yoga? Everything!!

Your body needs to be in balance, strong and flexible in order to have the proper fundamentals and mechanics of a good swing. What good is a proper swing when you can only have it for a few holes, then tire because of a sore back or stiff muscles or a nagging injury? Your hard work in developing a sound swing is for naught if your body rebels as you swing your club.

Yoga with it asanas or physical poses, along with pranayama or breath, can add much needed flexibility, strength and balance required for proper golf mechanics and fundamentals, and can reduce the effects of the repetitive nature of the golf swing. In this class we will learn easy, fundamental yoga poses to loosen and stretch the body to prepare it for a day on the course and afterwards, to reduce the effects of repetition and stress on the body.

Please join Pat Meredith, an enthusiastic golfer and HOTV Yoga teacher for an informative and fun way to add flexibility, strength, and balance to your game.

Yoga for Athletes $20 per classFrom $10 per visit with Student 10 Class Pass (age 13-21) passNo purchase required to enroll
