Gentle Yoga with Modifications
4:30 - 5:30pm every Thursday
Beginning Thursday, September 14

Gentle Yoga is a mind-body awareness practice that is far less strenuous than other forms. This relaxed version of yoga emphasizes mental relaxation through a series of breathing instruction and slow yoga stretches and poses. This class is accessible to all as various modifications will be offered including using the support of the wall, chair and other props as needed. This class is accessible to people with disabilities, via an elevator.

Series will be taught by Pat Meredith, RYT 200. Pat came to Manchester in 1979 with the intention of staying for only one ski season; Work at Bromley, ski and have some fun before settling down to career and a new life out of college. One ski season turned into 38 years of living in and around this wonderful community. Over the past year, Pat completed the 200 hour teacher training at HOTV.

Having a love of the outdoors and athletics, Pat turned her love into a career. With her husband Larry Collingwood, they ran a successful land surveying company, doing a variety of work from ski lift layout and ski accident investigation, residential and large parcel surveying to shopping malls. In the winter, Pat and her husband worked for Stratton Corporation as EMT’s and professional ski patrollers. During this time, Pat dabbled in yoga, but never gave it too much attention. She was too busy running, hiking, biking and kayaking to pursue an unfamiliar and uncomfortable activity!

Pat’s interest in the medical field prompted her to change her career later in life. In 2008, Pat graduated from Castleton State College with a nursing degree. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Rutland Regional Medical Center, the first aid room at Stratton Mountain and for Rutland Area Visiting Nurses and Hospice. She currently works at Bromley Mountain as the first aid room RN, and volunteers at the Bennington Free Clinic.

Pat’s focus shifted when her life changed dramatically. Her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2009, and she became his caretaker. A friend suggested yoga as a way to deal with the stress and rigors of caregiving. Already a practitioner of meditation, Pat headed to HOTV to give yoga another try. She worried about being not good enough and she thought that others in the class may judge her. However, her worries disappeared when the teacher said to the class, “Your mat is your island. You are safe and you are OK”.That caring and supportive philosophy of yoga practice as a way to self-discovery and self-care deeply resonated with Pat. In addition to her outdoor pursuits, yoga has become an integral part in Pat’s life, adding balance to a challenging life situation. The HOTV community and her yoga practice supported her as she dealt with her husband's illness, and continues to be a foundation of love and healing as she deals with his recent passing.
